At our February 6 meeting, we welcome, via Zoom, Luke Vorstermans as part of our Service Above Self Stories series. Luke is CEO of the Roll a Hippo Foundation, International Chair of the Hippo Roller Project, and a fellow Rotarian. Roll a Hippo is a Rotary-fueled project that has already distributed over 2,200 hippo rollers and garden kits to impoverished women in Southern Africa.
I hope you will join us for this inspiring presentation!
As a member of our service committee, I have coordinated a few volunteer opportunities at Fisher House Ann Arbor. The volunteer opportunity is for us to make a homemade dinner meal for the Veteran and military families that are staying at Fisher House while receiving care at the VA Hospital. It is a similar set-up as Ronald McDonald House if you are familiar with that. Fisher House has a beautiful kitchen with double ovens, stove top, microwave, dishwasher, and all meal prep items you may need. (Talk about a dream kitchen ) You can either prepare the dinner there or you can prepare some it ahead of time and just drop off by dinner time.
Fisher House asks that the dinner be ready to serve by 4:30/5PM. In the past I have arrived between 2:30/3 to start getting the meal ready. I think itโs fun to cook there. Iโve had the opportunity to talk to some wonderful people there. Usually there is a main course with some sort of salad/vegetable, starch as well as a dessert. You can view the Meal Train link below and get some ideas of what others are preparing. Once the meal is served, you clean up the area you cooked in and then you are welcome to leave. Iโve usually left around 5:45. The staff will put away all the leftovers. We can have up to FOUR VOLUNTEERS TOTAL on each date.
Dates for Dinner Prep:
Thursday, February 29th
Tuesday, March 19th
Tuesday, March 26th
Location: 2215 Fuller Rd. Bldg. 36 Ann Arbor, MI 48105
Details from the Fisher House website/Meal Train sign up: https://www.mealtrain.com/trains/v5w1n8I I can update the Meal Train link once the volunteer groups have decided what food they would like to prepare.
